Malcolm Group staff celebrate training success with New College Lanarkshire

New College Lanarkshire is working with The Malcolm Group to deliver management training programmes in North Lanarkshire and West Yorkshire.

Tutors from the College provided instruction at the logistics and construction giant’s base at Newhouse Industrial Estate, Lanarkshire and at its depots in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

Awards ceremonies were held recently to acknowledge the completion of the leadership qualifications.

Malcolm Group staff undertook ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) Level 3 qualifications, which are designed for both existing and aspiring managers looking to develop key management skills to support team performance and development.

Based in Linwood, Renfrewshire, The Malcolm Group originated in the 1920s as a small family enterprise and has since grown to become one of the UK’s largest providers of logistics, construction and maintenance services.

Eleven members of staff from their Wakefield and Newhouse depots achieved the ILM Level 3 Award, with eight progressing on to achieve the more advanced ILM Level 3 Certificate.

A further three employees from Newhouse gained college certification for attending the training.

One of the employees, Tom Ross, who is a Depot Manager in Crick, Northamptonshire, said: “The ILM this year has been an enjoyable and informative experience.

“The most important thing I took from the course is to stay focused, ensure you get clear and consistent goals across to your teams and they will give you clear and consistent results.

“This isn’t always the easiest task given the changeable nature of our business and the short lead times we can all face, but if everybody understands what their contribution is then the outcome will be what our customers have come to expect from us.”

New College Lanarkshire has been delivering a bespoke staff development programme in partnership with The Malcolm Group for 12 months.

Tutor John Hoey said: “Working with The Malcolm Group has been one of the highlights of my career with New College Lanarkshire.

“The Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) qualifications are specifically designed for the workplace and they have to be earned by submitting comprehensive assignments.

“I am delighted for, and proud of, those managers who have achieved these qualifications. It takes time and commitment and they have all stepped up to that challenge.

“I am hopeful that the College’s partnership with The Malcolm Group continues to grow and develop.”

The partnership between New College Lanarkshire and The Malcolm Group is expected to expand with further supervisor training planned for this year, while discussions are ongoing about the creation of apprenticeship schemes and employability programmes to support people into employment.
